Folks remembering #AaronSwartz today – remember that he was moving publicly-funded research out from behind a paywall.

Then remember the only reason the case went forward is because federal prosecutors, specifically Carmen Ortiz and Stephen Heymann, wanted to make an example of him.

“Theft is theft, and it doesn’t matter if you use a crowbar or a computer” were Heymann’s words at the time.

Notice how federal prosecutors aren’t bullying Sam Altman for the wholesale theft of content network-wide, to build a machine that spews bullshit and further destroys our ability to determine the truth?

It’s because he’s doing it for private profit, while Aaron worked for the public good.

Never let yourself be tricked into believing the legal system is a justice system.

Where is the internet? Part of the answer lies with about 500 undersea cables that stretch across the oceans. I wrote about them, a story that links colonial history and sharks to sabotage and geopolitics. https://www.forkingpaths.co/p/the-hidden-world-of-undersea-cables

I am drinking Guinness Draught 0.0 by Guinness at Guinness Open Gate Brewery & Barrel House in Halethorpe.

Name: Guinness Draught 0.0
Brewery: Guinness
Style: Non-Alcoholic Beer – Porter / Stout
Alcohol by volume (ABV): 0%
IBU: 28
Brewer’s Notes: To create Guinness 0.0, the St James’s Gate brewers start by brewing Guinness exactly as they always have, using the same natural ingredients; water, barley, hops and yeast; before gently removing the alcohol through a cold filtration method. The cold filtration process allows the alcohol to be filtered out without presenting thermal stress to the beer, protecting the integrity of its taste and character. The brewers then carefully blend and balance the flavours to ensure the distinctive flavour profile and taste characteristics of Guinness.

The resulting product is a stout that is unmistakably Guinness, just without the alcohol, featuring the same dark, ruby red liquid and creamy head, hints of chocolate and coffee.

Untappd.

I am drinking Guinness Draught by Guinness at Guinness Open Gate Brewery & Barrel House in Halethorpe.

Name: Guinness Draught
Brewery: Guinness
Style: Stout – Irish Dry
Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.2%
IBU: 45
Brewer’s Notes: Swirling clouds tumble as the storm begins to calm. Settle. Breathe in the moment, then break through the smooth, light head to the bittersweet reward.

Unmistakeably GUINNESS, from the first velvet sip to the last, lingering drop. And every deep-dark satisfying mouthful in between.

Pure beauty. Pure GUINNESS.

Guinness Draught is sold in kegs, widget cans, and bottles. The ABV varies from 4.1 to 4.3%.

Guinness Extra Cold is the exact same beer only served through a super cooler at 3.5 °C

Untappd.

Here’s the review I left on Google Maps:

Was fortunate enough to have a meal at Cured on the evening of January 3rd. The staff was super friendly and very accommodating to dietary restrictions and a picky six year old.

I started with the mushroom soup which was pleasantly earthy and slightly sweet. In fact, I’m still thinking about that soup. I also tried the catfish fingers which were light and crispy and paired with a wonderful mustard dipping sauce. Oh and the brussel sprouts. Nicely charred and tossed in a slightly sweet sauce.

My main course was the gnocchi in a coconut tikka masala. The gnocchi was cooked perfectly and the sauce was a pleasant surprise. Snow peas balanced out the dish keeping it from feeling heavy or monotonous as gnocchi can often be.

I stuck with wine for the evening (and the wine list is nicely curated) but the cocktails that others ordered all looked great and were enjoyed.

Looking forward to coming back next time I come through town.

Hello friends. Yearly reminder that TurboTax is a scam, and that most people don’t need to pay for tax software every year. There are lists on IRS.gov of legitimate sites where you can file your federal taxes for freee

The one I used last year was just as simple as turbo tax, but wasn’t trying to upsell me constantly.

Hey, friends that work out regularly:

Please be kind to all the people starting a fitness journey over the next few weeks.

It's tough for many folk to get started, and being kind and helpful really helps everyone feel included. 👍🏿

Try not to complain about the NY resolution crowds. Instead, be happy that your gym will be solvent for another year!

Try not to get cranky about gym etiquette misses. Instead, take the opportunity to pass knowledge forward, with kindness! Someone taught you once.
