A zoomed in shot of the man standing over his base, the temple to the lower left. It is dusk and the dust is hovering in stillness just above the playa. Citizens ride their bikes in all directions. Some heading home for dinner, others heading out for a night of adventure.

It happened again. A city built on imagination rose from the dust and, as of now, lives only in our memories…and photos…but mostly memories. It continues to be an indescribable week in the desert. The event is not perfect and the people there are, well, people in all of the ways but it is still the social and creative reboot I crave. See you next year Black Rock City. #burningman #blackrockcity #brc2024

As with most ritual objects the spike itself is a meaningless fetish, imbued with meaning only by our intentions. To an outside observer, it’s a length of spray-painted rebar hammered into the dried mud with what looks like the world’s oldest sledgehammer. But to those inside the circle, it is a direct physical connection to something larger than any of us. A chance to contribute directly, with sinew and bone, an actual physical action in the physical world with an undeniable physical effect. Not a pixel cloud, not another Zoom meeting; the feel of wood against the palm and the ringing peal of steel on steel. After so much separation, the beginning of a homecoming.
