Over the holiday break I had hoped to go on a decent hike somewhere in the Angeles National Forest. Then the rains came and when the rains come the roads are a mess up in the mountains. So I looked for something a little more local and happened upon the Griffith Park Traverse as posted on California Through My Lens. Thanks to their thorough description I was able to plot the hike on GaiaGPS and off I went to hike across the largest urban park in the country.

A screenshot of the topographic map of Griffith Park with a pink line denoting my hiking path.

The initial climb up to Burbank Peak was steep (the graph in the above screenshot doesn’t lie) but that first view of the Los Angeles basin was pretty spectacular.

My hope was to take a panorama from every peak but the weather caught up with me about half way through. I did grab a few though.

Cahuenga Peak

After Cahuenga Peak it was on to Mt. Lee which is the most famous peak because, well, they put a big ol’ sign on it. After 25 years in LA I finally got up there.

The views of Griffith Observatory were excellent though it was easy to lose it in the sprawling city below.

I stopped for lunch on Taco Peak to eat…a peanut butter & jelly sandwich. I’m glad I stopped there because the rain started shortly after I continued on.

A closeup of my lunch! Peanut butter and jelly sandwich, potato chips, carrots, and some chocolate.

A Scrub Jay hung out with me while I ate. It may have been waiting for me to drop something.

Sometimes the next turn is elusive. Almost walked right by the trail.

The rain was here to stay…

Caught a glimpse of a deer munching some grass.

From Bunker Hill the 5 and the LA River look almost the same. A little more water in the river but only a little.

Despite the rainy second half of the hike it was a great trek and right in the middle of the city. It was about 6 miles start to finish and took a little over 3 hours. Much of the hike is exposed so this is definitely a late fall, winter, and early spring hike. Over the course of the 6 miles I hit:

  • Burbank Peak
  • Cahuenga Peak
  • Mt. Lee
  • Mt. Chapel
  • Baby Bell
  • Mt. Bell
  • Taco Peak
  • Mt. Hollywood
  • Hogback Peak
  • Glendale Peak
  • Bunker Hill

It would be incredible to see Los Angeles do something like this with the 110 through downtown. It seems impossible now but I imagine many in Seoul thought the same.

Planet Money did an interesting and informative story on the aftermath of the fires in Alta Dena. Worth a listen:

Graphics promoting Imagi-ne'er Do Wells for July 2024.

Big thanks to Brett Jackson for having me as the Master of Merriment to Diana O’Rourke‘s venerable celebrity judge-ness! It was a delightful night of zero-G (and not so zero-G) concepting fun and frivolity. If you’re in Los Angeles and you have a moment, do not miss your chance to attend an Imagi-Ne’er-Do-Wells (also here) gathering currently hosted at The Obscure in downtown LA. #losangeles #imagineerdowells #theobscure

A photo of California Narrow leaf Milkweed with a monarch butterfly on the flowers.

This past Saturday we had the pleasure of volunteering with Project Monarch LA at the Los Angeles State Historic Park to plant native California Narrow Leaf Milkweed in the north end of the park. Highly recommend joining them for future planting (and weeding of invasive species). #milkweed #monarchs #losangeles

Tonight tonight the clowns come out tonight! If you’re in #losangeles swing by Barbara’s at the Brewery for the opening of the Clown Show from 8p-11p. Various artists (I’m one of them!) have clown related works hanging in Barbara’s. Come by for the clowns, stay for the beverages. A painting of a clown emerging from the skin of a regular human type. The background is 4 fat stripes of blue orange purple and red. The foreground is the aforementioned clown emergent.

Goodbye P-22. You were a king. May you find endless mountains to roam with no freeways to cross or humans to bother you. We miss you.
